Green Tea and Fertility

While green tea has been studied for its numerous health benefits, there's at least one area of interest that needs more attention.

Can drinking green tea really enhance fertility?

Now that's the one-hundred-thousand dollar question! There's
a lot of conflicting opinions and research results
pertaining to that subject. We'll try to be fair and present both sides of the issue.

Any tea made from the Camellia sinensis bush contains
caffeine. On the bright side of the teapot, green tea has
only one-sixth to one-tenth of the amount of caffeine that a similar amount of regular coffee contains.

For those of us who are trying to watch our caffeine intake, that's a good deal. If you need a caffeine fix though, green tea isn't going to give you what you're looking for. Better start looking for the nearest Starbucks.

How can drinking green tea increase fertility?

A study done by the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program
in Oakland, California revealed that the chances of
conceiving doubled for woman who daily drank more than one- half cup of green tea containing caffeine (American Journal of Public Health, 1998). Because this wasn't the case for the other tested caffeinated beverages, caffeine wasn't deemed the causing agent. Some credit was given to the possibility that the polyphenols and hypoxanthine, compounds found in tea, resulted in a greater number of viable embryos, and increased maturation and fertilizability of oocytes.

Another conclusion of this study was that the healthy
lifestyle of many green tea drinkers, such as regular
exercise and decreased smoking and fat intake, might also
play a role in the enhanced fertility levels of the test subjects.

How can drinking green tea decrease fertility?

Tannic acids, an element found in green tea, have been shown
to cause fertility problems and greater chances at
miscarrying.

While not an "initial" fertility situation, rumor has it
that EGCG, the main disease-fighting antioxidant known as catechins in green tea that have been found to impede the growth of tumors, might also effect the blood vessel growth of a developing embryo.

Another post-fertility issue related to an excessive intake
of green tea involves the increased rate of birth defects.

Past studies have concluded that coffee consumption
increases the risk of miscarriages and that caffeine intake enhances the negative effects of alcohol intake on fertility. While not directly related to green tea, caffeine is the potential cause of such problems.

Should I or shouldn't I drink green tea for fertility
issues?

The best advice that we can give you is something you've
heard before. Check with your doctor first. Do your
homework. Then and only then can you make a truly educated
and well-informed decision about a very delicate issue. Whatever you decide, we wish you the best of luck in your quest for that new addition to your family. Cheers...

The Gossip About Green Tea Caffeine Content

It seems like health advice is rammed down our throats whenever we open a newspaper or watch the TV. Even one of my favorite drinks, green tea is under the medical spotlight.

It was when I chanced upon a report all about the potential side effects of caffeine and it mentioned green tea caffeine content as being something to be aware of that I sat up and listened. The thing I've found out over time is that when you get ten experts together you often get ten different views or opinions.

Where does that leave the poor old consumer who remains none the wiser, still scratching his head frustrated, not knowing what to do. Having to sift through information from studies and research is time consuming and very often there is conflicting data.

However, the most obvious way of avoiding caffeine in a drink like green tea or for that matter any other beverage, is to drink a decaffeinated variety.

Sounds pretty straightforward to me and easy to do. But wait, I read somewhere that the process of removing the caffeine leaves the green tea with fewer antioxidants.

These are the all important compounds and substances found in green tea that provide a lot of the health benefits we receive when we drink it. In this case all one has to do is drink a little bit more of the decaffeinated tea, ensuring you get the same level of antioxidants.

If like me you often find it difficult or inconvenient to brew green tea several times a day, there is an alternative. It's now possible to find daily nutritional supplements that contain a decaffeinated, green tea extract.

Just be sure it's from a recognized maker who uses the best natural ingredients.

Drinking Green Tea May Help You Lose Weight

Green Tea Also Has Anticancer Properties
------------------------------------------
Green tea, which has been reported to have anticancer
properties and to raise levels of antioxidants in the blood
that may ward off heart disease, now appears to have the
potential to promote weight loss. A new study in the March
issue of the International Journal of Obesity concludes that
green tea extract increases the burning of calories and fat
needed to lose weight.

Green Tea In Liquid Or Capsule May Aid In Weight Loss
------------------------------------------------------
Previous animal studies showed that green tea extract
increased thermogenesis, which is the generation of body
heat that occurs as a result of normal digestion,
absorption, and metabolization of food. In previous human
studies, the authors showed that consumption of green tea
increased thermogenesis as well as energy expenditure and
fat loss in healthy men, suggesting that green tea in liquid
or capsule form may be an effective way to aid weight loss.

In the new study, conducted by Abdul Dulloo, from the
Institute of Physiology at the University of Fribourg in
Switzerland, researchers exposed a particular type of fatty
tissue from rats to caffeine and to green tea extract
containing small concentrations of caffeine.

Green Tea Containing Caffeine Can Raise Metabolism
---------------------------------------------------------
Green tea containing caffeine significantly increased
thermogenesis by 28% to 77%, depending on dose, whereas
caffeine alone resulted in no significant increase. When the
stimulant ephedrine was added to green tea with caffeine,
the increase was even more significant compared with
caffeine alone and ephedrine alone. Caffeine and ephedrine
are used together in some herbal weight loss preparations,
but there are many safety concerns regarding ephedrine
because it raises heart rate and blood pressure.

Dulloo and colleagues also tested the plant compound EGCG
found in green tea. They found that the stimulant ephedrine
alone had no effect on thermogenesis, but that caffeine plus
ephedrine resulted in an 84% increase. However, adding EGCG
to the caffeine plus ephedrine mix increased thermogenesis
even further.

"Our studies ... raise the possibility that the therapeutic
potential of the green tea extract, or indeed a combination
of EGCG and caffeine, may be extended to the management of
obesity," Dulloo and co-authors write.

A researcher who reviewed the study for WebMD says that
while the work is interesting and extends this group's
previous findings by showing that compounds in green tea
other than caffeine are involved in thermogenesis, caution
should be used in interpreting animal data and applying it
to humans.

"They used [a particular type of fatty tissue] from rats and
we don't really know how significant that tissue is in
humans or if it is different in obese vs. non-obese people,"
says Sheri Zidenberg-Cherr, PhD. "It doesn't rule out the
significance of the findings, and it is a good model to use
to look at the effects of caffeine and the combination of
caffeine and the [plant] compounds that are present in green
tea, but until better clinical trials are done in humans,
it's hard to say what the physiological significance of this
actually may be."

Zidenberg-Cherr, who is an associate professor of nutrition
at the University of California, Davis, also points out that
thermogenesis plays only a very small role in energy
expenditure in adults. Most of the energy expended is used
to maintain basic body functions such as breathing and the
flow of blood throughout the body.

She says green tea may have many health benefits due to its
plant compounds, but cautions that it is not the answer to
weight-loss woes. "Green tea can't be used, and it shouldn't
be used, as a 'magic bullet' for weight loss," she tells
WebMD. "You've got to combine it with other changes,
including increasing physical activity and reducing a
high-calorie diet."

LICENSE TO EAT ICE CREAM!

The luscious, absolutely sinful "Old-fashioned Chocolate Ice Cream" is my favorite. It's recipe calls for 750ml double cream, 150 grams sugar, 4 oz plain chocolate and 4 egg yolks, ingredients which would normally find place in a health magazine under the "Foods to Avoid" category.

Yes, there is a way that you can have the license to eat it! Read on!

Astounding as it may seem, we never give up looking for that impossible dream! Passive exercise, foods that melt fat away, the overnight transformation from rotundity to a shape that rivals Kate Moss'!

Unfortunately, it can't happen. "Unless you are exercising your muscles, you are not expending energy," says William McArdle, PhD, a professor emeritus at Queens College and a nationally recognized expert on exercise and weight loss. "And if you're not expending energy, you won't lose weight. It's as simple as that."

Weight control is only one of the benefits of exercise. Regular workouts can strengthen your heart, bolster your immune system, lower your blood pressure, and reduce your risk of diabetes. Exercise will also reduce your stress, improve your mood, boost your energy, and help you to sleep.

A recent Harvard University study of 72,000 women found that three hours of brisk walking every week cut the risk of heart disease by 40 percent. A similar study of 2,700 elderly men in Hawaii found that those who walked 1.5 miles or more per day were only half as likely to develop heart trouble as men who seldom walked.

" Hello Jay. I have watched every day for your next part of Road-Map to the Fountain of Youth. I have found it very interesting and informative. Thank you so much. My husband, John and I have already put this information into motion. "
~ Marie Davidson

"Inactivity" is the real name for many so-called diseases of aging. And many of these can be controlled by exercise. For instance, fat around the middle can promote Type 2 diabetes by hampering the body's response to insulin. Aerobic exercise, however, if practiced consistently, can help control and prevent type 2 diabetes.

The risk of arthritis is heightened by obesity and lack of exercise. Extra weight puts stress on the joints. So, if you are overweight and suffer from unceasing joint pains, consult your doctor, as you may have
osteoarthritis. In cases where medication is required, Synflex Glucosamine treatment can prove very effective, especially when combined with regular exercise.
If you suffer from arthritic pain, check out http://www.youngagainforever.com/Arthritis.html

In addition, walking, jogging, dancing, and other weight-bearing exercises can help ward off osteoporosis by building bone strength in your spine and joints. And because exercise improves strength and balance, such exercises can also help prevent the falls that lead to broken bones.

Lifting weights is an excellent way to avoid bone and muscle loss, but the cornerstone of most senior fitness programs is aerobic exercise. It's benefits start with the heart. Regular workouts not only strengthen the heart muscle but will also help reduce hypertension and lower high cholesterol, the two major causes of heart disease.

To prevent strain on your heart, and injuries to your muscles, combine low-intensity warm-up exercises followed by five to 10 minutes of slow stretching before doing anything more vigorous. A set of exercises, like the Tibetan Technique, that pumps oxygen into your system and works your lungs and heart, without putting undue stress on your joints constitutes the perfect routine, http://www.youngagainforever.com/1.html

Supplement this daily regimen, if possible, with a short, 20 minute walk.

Before starting any exercise program, you should check with your doctor, and ask what heart rates you should target while exercising. Whatever activity you choose, try to maintain your target heart rate for at least 20 minutes several times each week. (Doing so once every day would be best.)

If you, like me, love ice cream, you have a strong incentive to exercise regularly. In the best-case scenario, you will wind up trim and healthy, without the pain of denying yourself your favorite dessert.

On the other side of the coin, even if the perfect shape eludes you, a healthier body, higher energy level and a more relaxed outlook are well within your reach.

And as you look and feel younger by the day, staying in shape will become it's own reward. You'll feel better about yourself! Don't forget to congratulate yourself, you've found the Tibetan Technique, the next best thing to the fountain of youth.

And, as an added bonus, you can treat yourself to ice cream without worrying about how it will look on your hips.

TEA OR COFFEE - THE MORNING CUPPA

Is that coffee in your morning cuppa? Think again before you take that first luxurious sip.

Ironically, the very substance that wakes you up, lets you down!

Over a period of time, caffeine can cause arthritis, stress and depression. Researchers say that it strains almost every organ and body system ; the liver, pancreas, glands, nerves, digestion and circulation. And that's not all; brain chemistry, too, becomes distorted through excessive caffeine dependence, resulting in over stimulation of the parts of the brain that regulate heart rate, breathing and muscle activity.

Difficult to give up, isn't it? How will you ever get through the day without it's boosting effect? But consider why and how it acts as a mood enhancer! Within 5 minutes of drinking it the caffeine hits your brain. Building up to a peak in 30 minutes....the high lasts from twelve to twenty hours. Like "speed", it unnaturally accelerates your thoughts, and physical ability to do things. It causes blood sugar to quickly rise and fall and stimulates the release of adrenaline. You work faster and do more, until you crash.

However, in the process, too much insulin is produced and blood sugar levels fall to a low level. That is why caffeine has been linked to diabetes. Coffee nerves include anxiety, irritability, lightheadedness, nausea and diarrhea.

Really bushed, but you need to work late on that report? Don't reach for a cup of coffee! All it will do is fool your body into thinking that it's not tired. The chemicals cause a temporary anti-depressant response in the brain and prevent the cortex from receiving the chemical signal that tells it that the body needs rest. Your brain is on high alert, but not in a natural way!

You MUST have a cup because you're hung-over and know no other way to silence the pounding drums inside your head? Hangovers are caused by alcohol expanding the blood vessels in the head. People with hangovers drink coffee because it constricts those swollen vessels. Drink lots of water instead!

We all need water to think, move and live. For every cup of coffee you drink, you lose approximately one and one-half cups of fluid. If you drink a caffeinated beverage while eating, you deprive yourself of food's nutritional value. Its diuretic effect depletes your nutritional reserves and lowers your resistance to illness. Essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, vitamins B (especially B-i) and C, are leached from your body. Your ability to absorb iron and calcium is impaired, which increases the chances of osteoporosis, anemia and kidney stones.

Cholesterol levels have been found to be dramatically higher in people who are habitual coffee drinkers... two or more cups of coffee a day. All this may increase your risk of heart disease. A rapid, racing or irregular heartbeat is one of the most common effects of caffeine. It raises blood pressure; elevates cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Additional norepinephrine secretion into the blood causes constriction of blood flow.

Need coffee to tackle constipation? It does this at the cost of impairing your colon's normal peristaltic action, while the artificial stimulation causes diarrhea and stomach cramps. As with all addictive drugs, the amount of caffeine needed to move your bowels increases with regular use. And while on the subject of our innards, remember that caffeine raises your stomach's production of hydrochloric acid, which is why there is a strong connection between ulcers, gastritis and caffeine. Abdominal pain is another common side effect of caffeine. Irritated bowels and intestines, leading to hemorrhoids, can develop as it dries out the intestinal lining.

The older you are the more caffeine sensitive you become. Caffeine can trigger facial spasms or tics, especially in children.

In 1996 the average American consumed over fifty-three gallons of soft drinks. An American child drinks about a can a day, an estimated thirty gallons of soda a year! If you add up the caffeine in chocolate and soft drinks, junior may be taking in hundreds of milligrams of caffeine every day. Because kids weigh less, the caffeine ratio is greater and more harmful.

Caffeine is listed as an addictive drug by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sodas, bottled teas and even water may contain caffeine. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, maintains that as little as three to five cans of cola (not including chocolate and coffee) can make a person caffeine dependent. Yet beverages are not required to list the presence or amount of caffeine added.

A psychoactive drug, its toxicity is cumulative. By the time part of the ingested caffeine is eliminated, coffee addicts have taken in more caffeine, repeating the vicious cycle over and over ! Could it be that the measured amounts are calculated to keep us addicted in much the same way as nicotine is measured out by cigarette manufacturers?

Homemade Chocolate Ice-Cream - A Quick & Easy Recipe

This is a very fast and simple recipe for ice-cream, which I invented when I misread an old Mary Berry recipe – I accidentally missed out the egg yolks, but the end result still tasted good. The reason why it’s so easy is that it doesn’t involve making a custard, as most ice-creams do. The secret to making good ice-cream is basically a matter of getting a decent emulsion of fat and water. I think that this recipe achieves that partly by having a higher fat content than other ice-cream recipes I’ve come across – so beware, large quantities will cause your waistline to expand!

This recipe also has the advantage that it’s safer than other “no-cook” ice-cream recipes I’ve come across, because there are no raw eggs in the recipe (dried egg white is pasteurised), so it can be safely served to children, pregnant women, the elderly and immuno-suppressed, who must avoid raw eggs.

However, like properly made ice-creams it is rich with no detectable ice crystals in mouth feel. The trick is speed – you really can’t afford to pause or loose focus when mixing the ingredients together, or the ingredients will separate, and the egg whites lose their aeration.

It’s also important to have your ingredients at the right temperature. Bring the cream almost up to room temperature by taking it out of the fridge about an hour before starting to make this recipe, or the contrast in temperatures between that and the chocolate can cause the chocolate to re-solidify in lots of little flakes in your recipe (If the container holding the cream still feels cool to the touch, then it’s too soon to start making the ice-cream).

It is possible to make this recipe without an ice-cream maker, but it is a lot more work – you will need to take the carton of ice-cream out of the freezer every ten minutes and give it a vigorous stir with a fork, over a period of about an hour or two, until it is completely set through.

I have used dark chocolate, but the finished product has a milk chocolate flavour, because of all the cream in the recipe. You can use milk chocolate, but I feel that the chocolate flavour then tends to be overly subtle in the finished product.

INGREDIENTS

160g (5.5oz) Dark Chocolate
2 dried egg whites, reconstituted according to packet instructions
175g (6oz) caster sugar
500ml (17 fl oz) single cream (18% fat cream)
250ml (8.5 fl oz) double cream (48% fat cream)

METHOD

Take the double & single cream out of the fridge to warm up. Make sure your ice-cream maker is ready to use, and have all your equipment handy (you don’t want to have to break off in the middle of making this to rummage in a drawer)

Melt chocolate by the usual method in a pyrex bowl over simmering water, or in a double boiler. When it has melted, add the double cream to the chocolate in the warm bowl, and stir well. Then add the single cream, continuously gently stirring the mixture until it is perfectly even.

Then whisk the egg whites until stiff (and about double the volume) using an electric beater. This will take about 2 minutes. Then add the sugar, little by little, continuing to whisk while doing so.

Then whisk in the chocolate and cream mixture, again, a little at a time, whisking continuously. Put the mixture straight into the ice-cream maker, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to freeze the ice-cream.

Once frozen, if you are not eating the ice-cream straight away, then put immediately into a container, and put it in the freezer. The recipe makes about 1.5 litres of ice-cream. The ice-cream will tend to become more solid in the freezer as time goes on, so if it remains in the freezer for more than 4 hours, you will need to remove the container from the freezer and put the container in the fridge for about 20 minutes to let it soften very slightly before serving.

You can make this recipe with any type of chocolate that takes your fancy, but you may want to reduce the sugar content down to about 140g for milk chocolate or 120g for white chocolate to avoid the sweetness overwhelming the flavour of the chocolate. Of course, you can also add other ingredients such as small pieces of fruit, flavourings like mint or citrus oils, spices, caramel sauce, or confectionery pieces to ring the changes. However, if you are adding large quantities of fruit, you will need to use a higher fat cream to avoid getting lots of large ice crystals – I suggest that in this case you use entirely double cream, rather than a mixture of single and double cream. However, be careful with double cream and ice-cream makers – on occasions when my attention slipped, the cream whipped itself into butter, which had a most peculiar texture when eaten!

For an 80g serving (about 2 scoops), fat content is 21g; calorie content 270kcal.

How Does Caffeine Help In Relieving Migraine

According to a study, around 29.5 million Americans suffer from migraines (women being affected three times more than men). Although not common, but headaches can affect children also.
The first thing which comes to mind when we have a headache is caffeine. But does this product really help in relieving headaches? To find out the answer to this question it’s important to first understand what causes a headache and what properties of caffeine could help in relieving the headache.
Headache is caused due to variations in the quantity of the chemical called serotonin in the body. This chemical affects the blood vessels by contracting them if its level is high and dilating (swelling) the blood vessels when its level is low. When the blood vessels swell, we experience an acute throbbing pain in our head (normally localized near the temples) which is known as headache.
Caffeine is a stimulant and works on the nervous system. It helps not only in making a person alert, it works as a diuretic and a vasoconstrictor (constricts blood vessels) also. This property is what makes it useful in treatment of migraines. It is popularly used in many prescriptions and over-the-counter headache medications. It is believed to increase the effectiveness of the pain-relieving medication by 40%.
Another important aspect is that it helps the body to absorb the pain relieving medicines more quickly of which it is a part. This helps in providing faster relief.
Another common consideration of using it in the medication is that if the medication has some percentage of caffeine, the patient will need lesser of the medication as the process of healing is speeded up. This helps in eliminating any side effects from the primary medication (addiction, overdose or interactions with other medications).
It doesn’t necessarily be consumed through medicines; it can be consumed in form of coffee, tea, soda or chocolate also. These products contain a lot of caffeine (chocolate is highly caffeinated).

Gainesville Ice Cream

Sweet Dreams has the best ice cream in Gainesville. It's been owned and operated by Mike and Lisa Manfredi from the very beginning, and they've always made good, old-fashioned home made ice cream.

One of the best things about Sweet Dreams ice cream is the variety of flavors. Every time you go, there's something different. Some of the flavors include Peanut Butter Madness, Joe Candy Store, Turkish Delight (with real figs!), Creme Brulee, and Green Tea Ginger, to name a few. There are always 24 different flavors in the case at all times, and they have made over 500 different flavors since the store opened.

If you're not as adventurous when it comes to desserts, don't worry; there are always flavors like vanilla, mint, coffee, and Mike's personal favorite, chocolate.

Finding truly homemade dessert is difficult, and even more difficult in Gainesville, but every scoop sold there is made right there in the back of the shop. It is very unusual to be able to buy a scoop directly from the person who came up with the recipe and made the ice cream themselves, literally a few feet from where it was made. And they do make all their own recipes--many "homemade" stores use industry-standard recipes that all end up tasting the same, but every flavor at Sweet Dreams is truly original.

One thing that blows people away when they come to Sweet Dreams of Gainesville is the prices. Even though they sell super-premium ice cream, even though all of the flavors are original, even though every scoop is homemade, right there in the store--it costs less than at any chain store. Mike and Lisa firmly believe in maintaining prices that make it possible for anyone to enjoy a nice treat without worrying about breaking the bank.

Their dessert is also featured at several Gainesville restaurants. Blue Highway, Boca Fiesta, and Buddha Belly all offer a variety of Sweet Dreams ice cream, and Ti Amo incorporates Sweet Dreams ice cream into its high-end desserts.

The Sweet Dreams firetruck has become something of a staple in Gainesville. A few years ago, Mike saw a used firetruck for sale, and was inspired to buy it and turn it into a mobile kitchen. The truck can now be seen with some regularity at restaurant openings, fairs, carnivals, parties, and even corporate events all around Gainesville and Alachua county.

But they feature more than just super-premium homemade ice cream. At Sweet Dreams of Gainesville, you can also get sorbets, cakes, brownies, chocolate-dipped bananas, and a changing assortment of other frozen treats--not to mention root beer on draught, served in icy, frosted mugs. Combine that with the family-friendly atmosphere, good music, board games, and outdoor seating, and it becomes hard to go anywhere else.

If you're looking for an exceptional dessert shop in Gainesville, Sweet Dreams is the place to go. Not only do they feature the best homemade ice cream in Gainesville and all-original, creative flavors, but they keep prices low enough so that anyone can afford to go. Join thousands of other Gainesville residents, and check out this one-of-a-kind shop. You'll be glad you did.
