Great Kitchen Decorating Ideas and Tips

Are you tired of walking into the same drab kitchen every day? Or perhaps you have just moved into a home and your kitchen area hasn't yet taken on any personality. Or, you may think your current kitchen is a decorating disaster. Whatever your particular situation, the kitchen decorating ideas that follow can help you!

These kitchen decorating ideas are simple, easy to implement and most are very cost effective. And, some of the tips for decorating a kitchen that follow are just plain common sense! But when put together into a plan of action, the results are worth each step!

First, make a list of everything that you want to change, no matter what the cost. Just make a list.

Then determine how much you want to spend, or can afford to spend, on your kitchen decorating project. With that number in mind, go back through the list you just compiled and decide what is going to get done at this time. Some of the items on the list for decorating your kitchen may have to wait until the budget catches up.

So, now you have a list in hand of things you want to change. For most folks, the list will include items pertaining to the colors, style, drabness, worn out (or tired of) accessories, etc.

Here are the kitchen decorating ideas and tips that will help you take action and check off those items on your list!

1. Give the entire kitchen a thorough cleaning, including the floors, cabinets and windows. I know, it's not a fun way to start decorating your kitchen, but you will be amazed at how much brighter everything will look when it is freshly cleaned.

Remove everything from the walls and countertops. You are going to start fresh there as well.

2. Assess the color scheme for the kitchen. Does it relate to the rest of your home? Even if a neutral background is your preference, accents of other colors found in your home would be a good addition to the kitchen decor. If everything is white or neutral in the kitchen it could be one of the reasons why you don't love the space so much.

Consider putting some color on the walls. If your kitchen space is small, don't worry about that. Go ahead and make it as colorful as you please.

Have you been thinking about introducing a new accent color in your home? Try it out in small doses in the kitchen area and see how it works. Use your new color in accessories that can be easily changed in case you are not so thrilled with the results.

3. How much light does the kitchen get, natural or otherwise. If the kitchen area has poor lighting overall it can feel almost cave-like. So, here is your next kitchen decorating idea, and it is two-fold.

First, replace one light fixture in the kitchen area with something new and fresh. It may be in the nook, over the sink or under the cabinets.

Then, add one new source of lighting in this area. This can be a simple as do-it-yourself under cabinet lights, or possibly some 'mood' lighting on top of your cabinets if you have space above the soffit. Rope lighting can be a good choice in this area.

As for the windows, in most instances you will want to have as much natural light coming in as possible during the daytime hours. Utilize a type of blind or shade that can fully open during the day and then close to give you privacy in the evening.

Soften the windows with a valance. That will keep your area feeling open and light but will provide a counterpoint to the hard surfaces of the kitchen.

4. The next kitchen decorating idea is to use accessories to finish decorating your kitchen.

You can go about this in the typical way and purchase a matching set of kitchen accessories such as place mats, dishtowels, salt/pepper shakers and the like, that contain the colors/theme/style you enjoy. Ho-hum.

Or, you can spend a little bit more time and search for kitchen accessories that include the elements you want in terms of color/theme/style, but a not a matching set. Look for accessories such as small rugs, artwork (real artwork if you have room for it - not the 'kitcheny' looking stuff), place mats, dishes/serving pieces that have your colors in them. Put some different patterns together, use some solids, and look for one or two pieces that may seem more traditional for the kitchen.

The key here is to find unique pieces that may even be unexpected in the kitchen area, but fit in with your own unique decor personality. Have fun and enjoy your newly decorated kitchen!

Green Tea and Fertility

While green tea has been studied for its numerous health benefits, there's at least one area of interest that needs more attention.

Can drinking green tea really enhance fertility?

Now that's the one-hundred-thousand dollar question! There's
a lot of conflicting opinions and research results
pertaining to that subject. We'll try to be fair and present both sides of the issue.

Any tea made from the Camellia sinensis bush contains
caffeine. On the bright side of the teapot, green tea has
only one-sixth to one-tenth of the amount of caffeine that a similar amount of regular coffee contains.

For those of us who are trying to watch our caffeine intake, that's a good deal. If you need a caffeine fix though, green tea isn't going to give you what you're looking for. Better start looking for the nearest Starbucks.

How can drinking green tea increase fertility?

A study done by the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program
in Oakland, California revealed that the chances of
conceiving doubled for woman who daily drank more than one- half cup of green tea containing caffeine (American Journal of Public Health, 1998). Because this wasn't the case for the other tested caffeinated beverages, caffeine wasn't deemed the causing agent. Some credit was given to the possibility that the polyphenols and hypoxanthine, compounds found in tea, resulted in a greater number of viable embryos, and increased maturation and fertilizability of oocytes.

Another conclusion of this study was that the healthy
lifestyle of many green tea drinkers, such as regular
exercise and decreased smoking and fat intake, might also
play a role in the enhanced fertility levels of the test subjects.

How can drinking green tea decrease fertility?

Tannic acids, an element found in green tea, have been shown
to cause fertility problems and greater chances at
miscarrying.

While not an "initial" fertility situation, rumor has it
that EGCG, the main disease-fighting antioxidant known as catechins in green tea that have been found to impede the growth of tumors, might also effect the blood vessel growth of a developing embryo.

Another post-fertility issue related to an excessive intake
of green tea involves the increased rate of birth defects.

Past studies have concluded that coffee consumption
increases the risk of miscarriages and that caffeine intake enhances the negative effects of alcohol intake on fertility. While not directly related to green tea, caffeine is the potential cause of such problems.

Should I or shouldn't I drink green tea for fertility
issues?

The best advice that we can give you is something you've
heard before. Check with your doctor first. Do your
homework. Then and only then can you make a truly educated
and well-informed decision about a very delicate issue. Whatever you decide, we wish you the best of luck in your quest for that new addition to your family. Cheers...

The Gossip About Green Tea Caffeine Content

It seems like health advice is rammed down our throats whenever we open a newspaper or watch the TV. Even one of my favorite drinks, green tea is under the medical spotlight.

It was when I chanced upon a report all about the potential side effects of caffeine and it mentioned green tea caffeine content as being something to be aware of that I sat up and listened. The thing I've found out over time is that when you get ten experts together you often get ten different views or opinions.

Where does that leave the poor old consumer who remains none the wiser, still scratching his head frustrated, not knowing what to do. Having to sift through information from studies and research is time consuming and very often there is conflicting data.

However, the most obvious way of avoiding caffeine in a drink like green tea or for that matter any other beverage, is to drink a decaffeinated variety.

Sounds pretty straightforward to me and easy to do. But wait, I read somewhere that the process of removing the caffeine leaves the green tea with fewer antioxidants.

These are the all important compounds and substances found in green tea that provide a lot of the health benefits we receive when we drink it. In this case all one has to do is drink a little bit more of the decaffeinated tea, ensuring you get the same level of antioxidants.

If like me you often find it difficult or inconvenient to brew green tea several times a day, there is an alternative. It's now possible to find daily nutritional supplements that contain a decaffeinated, green tea extract.

Just be sure it's from a recognized maker who uses the best natural ingredients.
